Record events attribution in climate studies

چکیده
Within the statistical climatology literature, inferring contributions of potential causes with regard to climate change has become a recurrent research theme during this last decade. In particular, disentangling human induced (anthropogenic) forcings from natural represents nontrivial task, especially when focal point moves away mean behaviors and goes towards extreme events high societal impacts. Most studies found in field event attributions (EEA) rely on value theory. Under theoretical umbrella, it is often assumed that, for given location, temporal changes extremes can be detected both location scale parameters an distribution, while its shape parameter remains unchanged over time. This assumption constant tail between so-called factual world (all forcings) counterfactual one (without anthropogenic forcing) challenged due fact that important forcing could impact large atmospheric oceanic circulation patterns, consequently, latter reshape full including drives extremal behavior. article, we study how allowing different worlds affect analysis records. extend work Naveau et al. which case was not treated. Attribution of Weather and Climate-Related Extreme Events
Unusual or extreme weather and climate-related events are of great public concern and interest, yet there are often conflicting messages from scientists about whether such events can be linked to climate change. There is clear evidence that climate has changed as a result of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, and that across the globe some aspects of extremes have changed as a result. But ...
متن کاملAttribution of extreme weather and climate‐related events
Extreme weather and climate-related events occur in a particular place, by definition, infrequently. It is therefore challenging to detect systematic changes in their occurrence given the relative shortness of observational records. However, there is a clear interest from outside the climate science community in the extent to which recent damaging extreme events can be linked to human-induced c...
متن کاملAn assessment of the solar irradiance record for climate studies
Total solar irradiance, the spatially and spectrally integrated radiant output from the Sun at a mean Sun-Earth distance of 1 astronomical unit, provides nearly all the energy driving the Earth’s climate system. Variations in this energy, particularly over long time scales, contribute to changes in Earth’s climate and have been linked to historical glaciation and inter-glacial periods as well a...
متن کاملDADA: data assimilation for the detection and attribution of weather and climate-related events
We describe a new approach that allows for systematic causal attribution of weather and climate-related events, in near-real time. The method is designed so as to facilitate its implementation at meteorological centers by relying on data and methods that are routinely available when numerically forecasting the weather. We thus show that causal attribution can be obtained as a by-product of data...
